Sun – gorgeous, informative minimalism

By Nick Salter, Junior Strategist

Jakob Henner, a designer from Copenhagen, has crafted a gorgeously minimal web-based weather app for iOS devices aptly named Sun.

Sun exemplifies great use of open-source web technologies and APIs to bridge the gap between a web page and smartphone hardware. Minimal in design, code and execution it’s clear that Sun is not designed to have the same functionality as its native app counterparts do, but rather as a quick reference without all the clutter.

Built on HTML, CSS and jQuery for touch gestures, the web app works fairly seamlessly within the mobile Safari browser and utilises location services to pull accurate location-based data. The backend relies on Yahoo and Google APIs for location and weather data respectively.
