10 tips for Aussies going to America for SXSW

By Scott Nolan, Senior Designer

  1. Look at who’s talking, not the name of the talk. (But throw in some wild cards while you’re there. You’ll be surprised what you find.)
  2. You will see some terribly boring sessions that don’t live up to the hype.
  3. Bring your chargers, your smart phone and tablets will die.
  4. Get to Austin at least a full day early so you can check out what it’s like, find out where things are, but most importantly catch up on some sleep.
  5. Plan early, the hotels book out quickly.
  6. There isn’t a lot of (in fact pretty much any) healthy food in Austin.
  7. Watch out for the zebra crossings – they don’t work the same way. The lights don’t even beep for the blind.
  8. The weather is random, so pack for all seasons.
  9. Watch out for weekday rush hours when you’re trying to get around. They’re nuts.
  10. Finally check out SX Survival

I’m curious too. I love Seth he’s full of great ideas. However, he aearldy had a well established platform before this latest success. And while I agree this is an amazing time for creativity to explode, it still remains to be seen how creators (most of them anyhow) can make a living at creating. It’s an interesting time to be an artist.e(Children’s book author/illustrator)
